In this two-part series, we look back at the best bits of 2018. This week’s blog is about unveiling the success we’ve experienced behind the scenes at HQ with new hires, team outings, culture-boosting initiatives and plenty of movie trips! We asked our Talent Manager, People and Culture, Callie Ewin, and our Engineering Manager, Lindsay Jopson, what their biggest highlights have been this year. Here’s what they had to say.
Callie: 2018 has been a year filled with success, celebration, growth and collaboration at Movio. We haven’t had a bigger year since we began our journey in 2010, externally with our products and customer relationships, but also internally with our staff and culture. As movie-lovers, we’ve bonded over numerous cinema visits and in-house film screenings, but that’s a given here. Our focus on health and wellness has taken a front seat in 2018, with the addition of a six week squash tournament, a Movio soccer team, action-packed ski trip and a full week of mindfulness for mental health awareness week. We launched The W Platform, an initiative led by Ashleigh from our marketing team, created to offer specific support and growth opportunities for the women at Movio. Some team-building highlights for me have been the HQ Escape Room challenge and pool night, while our overseas offices attended baseball games and launched a theatre club, in LA and London respectively.
I could go on about the awesome year we’ve had internally, but I think that really captures the highlights of 2018 for me. We’ve already got a number of things in the pipeline for next year, so I can’t see things slowing down any time soon!
Lindsay: From my side, we’ve managed to get a number of really cool things off the ground this year with our engineering and data science teams. We’ve hosted Meetups almost every other week for all sorts of technology - Go, Rust, Functional Programming & the Junior Developer Meetup: it’s been full-on. We’ve expanded our internship offering with placements in both development and data science this year, which is a great learning curve for us as well as our interns. We’ve also just kicked off our first-ever Graduate Program, with two incredibly smart young people joining us in the coming weeks.
2018 has really been a year of giving back to the community we care so much about, and it’s been really exciting to share the amazing stuff we get to do at Movio on a day-to-day basis with other passionate engineers - both seasoned and new to the industry. Here’s to more of the same in 2019!
