Meet Movio: A Day In The Life Of An Account Manager

My name’s Ryan, and the following is what a typical day is like for me as an Account Manager in Movio’s LA office. Yes, that Los Angeles - home to Beverly Hills, full of swimming pools and movie stars! We’re all movie geeks here, and my love of cinema analytics and experience working in the movie industry means I’m in the perfect place. Here’s a day in my life.

8 AM - I try to get to the office fairly early to beat some of the traffic and be ready for my morning meetings. Everything you’ve heard about Los Angeles traffic is true - it’s the worst ever, but if the destination is a good one, it’s worth it! A mug of coffee always helps with the drive - that, and a good audiobook. Once I arrive, it’s all about checking emails and getting my bearings for the day.

On Mondays, I send a full weekend Box Office report to everyone in the LA team. The report consists of the weekend’s top ten movies at the box office and the results. These reports are a fun way to kickstart my week and get in the right headspace. I love Box Office analysis, and have since I was in high school - which is why I love working in a company like Movio. The reports give me the opportunity to draw on my own knowledge of the movie industry, as well as gathering statistics from industry news and our own products. With tools such as Movio Media you can go beyond the figures and look at audience demographics, which can reveal trends and actionable insights.

9.30 AM - This is the time that our entire team - Matthew, Clayton, Cristal, Jeff, Kate, Andy and myself - get together for our daily “Scrum” meeting. This meeting is a chance for everyone to discuss what they plan to accomplish that day. It’s also an opportunity to see progress we’re making and if there is anything we can collaborate on or help others with. The office has a relaxed feel so, although these meetings happen every day, there are always laughs and good-natured ribbing.

10:15 AM - Next, it’s all about implementing the tasks we discussed in the Scrum. As an Account Manager, my main goal is to oversee my circuits and ensure they're getting everything they need from Movio. Most mornings, I prepare for my upcoming meetings with the clients I represent, which always includes looking over the account and checking the campaigns are going out without anomalies. It’s always important to be one step ahead of any issues clients may have.

Each exhibitor account is different. Some of my more seasoned client accounts don’t need so much guidance, and understand exactly what they need and how to get it. However, there are always ways you can work with them to better their accounts and reach the best audience. You must, however, always be prepared for the unexpected. Having only been at Movio a short time, I’m attempting to learn more every day. I will take the time to pore over all accounts and understand each of them front to back. For smaller accounts, I look at how each theater operates, and what is working best in their campaigns.

One of the best parts of Movio for me is the openness of the entire group. Being one of the newest members of the team, I have lots of questions, and everyone around me is willing to share their expertise. We also share our office with our parent company, Vista Group, who are always happy to support us when required.

12 PM - The break room here in Los Angeles is great - I try my best to eat there when I can, and there is always good coffee, soda, filtered water and snacks available. Having an arcade machine and foosball table available doesn’t hurt, regardless of how good I am at playing them! After eating a quick lunch, I try to get outside and stretch my legs. It’s the perfect opportunity to clear my head and get ready for the rest of the day - and sunny Southern California is perfect for an afternoon walk.

1 PM - After lunch, the rest of my day is filled with meetings, calls and checks. Right now, I’m in the midst of assisting with a health check for one of my clients. Our job is to work with the theater chain and apply new best practices for them, their staff and their loyalty members. Once finished we are better aligned to create smarter more targeted campaigns. For some clients we offer Operational and Strategic Services. We help create and design effective campaigns that reach the right targeted audiences. I’m also helping to bring on board a brand new client, which is very exciting for two reasons; one is that I know the theater chain personally and I'm excited to be working with them again, and the other is that I’m learning more of the technical side of Movio Cinema and how that knowledge brings customers onboard, gets them engaged and encourages them to see the benefits from day one.

3 PM - For our local exhibitors, we occasionally bring them in for an update. There is nothing like having a face-to-face meeting with your client. It also gives you the opportunity to share new and exciting modules like Movie Insights. I’m a big believer in relationships and the connection you can make with a customer in person is incredibly important.

4.30 PM - As the day is ending, I want to be sure there isn’t anything outstanding I need to achieve with my co-workers - here, and at HQ in New Zealand - and any of my clients. For me, it’s always important to look over my notes and ensure I’ve made the necessary check marks and completed everything I set out to. If I’m happy, it’s home time! In the evenings, the team usually like to head off to a new movie screening together or even the occasional Dodgers game - after all, nothing is more American or brings people together quite like baseball! If we don’t have a team outing lined up, it’s off to my car and the crazy drive home, with the podcast of Ernest Hemingway’s “A Farewell to Arms” keeping me occupied on the journey.
