The Movio Crew On London Life

The Movio London office is a beautiful one. Sitting in a converted old aircraft factory right in the middle of the city, it is home to our diverse, hard-working, cinema-loving crew. With our headquarters in Auckland, and offices in Los Angeles, the London office is vital in supporting our EMEA clients and growth as well as keeping alive our connection with the European film industry. Aside from BAU, the team can be found travelling to industry events, client visits and never missing the very important ‘Friday Stein’ nomination.

We chatted to some of our London crew to get the lowdown on the Movio office and why it’s their favourite place.

Gabriel Swartland
Senior Vice President, Client Services

What do you enjoy most about working in the London office?
There is a lot I really like about our London office starting with the people. We have a very friendly, welcoming team with a great mix of characters all sharing a love of cinema. What I enjoy most is the collegiate nature of our discussions and debates. Anything goes and everyone has a voice which makes for a really fun, collaborative working environment.

How would you describe your day-to-day in three words?
Surprising, challenging, rewarding.

If there’s one piece of advice you could give someone who’s thinking about diving into the film and technology space, what would it be?
It is a really exciting time to be working in the cinema industry with lots of changes happening in both exhibition and distribution, alongside record-breaking box office figures. Cinema is going from strength to strength and one thing is abundantly clear, technology and the smart use of data in particular, is playing an essential role in driving the industry forward. For curious minds keen to challenge conventions, and if film and tech is your thing, what are you waiting for?

What do you enjoy most about working in the London office?
I love the relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the constant evolution of Movio's products and client strategies in EMEA, and how much we get to work with interesting film data. Also, Movio's women platform (W Platform) is a great source of learning and networking.

How would you describe your day-to-day in three words?
Dynamic, flexible, client-focused.

If there’s one piece of advice you could give someone who’s thinking about diving into the film and technology space, what would it be?
Since tech and data-driven decision-making in film are such a new phenomenon, I'd say getting used to uncertainty is high up in the list of skills needed. Other than that it's a brilliant time to join, so jump on board!

What do you enjoy most about working for Movio?
Before I joined Movio I already knew quite a bit about the company. The reasons why I joined are exactly why I continue to love to work at Movio - we are at the forefront of technology in the cinema industry to the point that it might even sound like magic until you understand how we do it.

How would you describe your day-to-day in three words?
Fulfilling, intense and captivating.

If there’s one piece of advice you could give someone who’s thinking about diving into the film and technology space, what would it be?
The possibilities are immense, there is just so much that can still be done. It's the right place for people that want to continue learning and thriving while interacting with amazing people in an exciting industry.

What attracted you to join the London team?
It was a whole multitude of things, really - from my early impressions of the company, to what I wanted to get out of an internship, to my own personal interests (movies, of course - and data!). I found that Movio’s 'ethos' is very collaborative and forward-looking, which suggested lots of potential for trying many new things that I couldn’t do anywhere else.

What’s the favourite part of your day at Movio?
Since each day is pretty varied, there’s only one ‘daily’ constant - but it’s still my favourite - and that is the people I work with. Everyone is so helpful, friendly and patient with me, and I appreciate it, even when I'm teased for being too scared to watch horror movies, or for eating the same ‘sad sandwich' every day.

What’s one thing that you’ve found surprising about working here, that you weren’t expecting when you applied?
I’ve been chuffed with the amount of responsibility I’ve been given, and so quickly too. This week in particular has been a challenge because a few people are out of office for the holidays, but it worked out super well! It also impresses me how open people at Movio are concerning input or suggestions on the product(s) - even from a junior team member such as me.

The London team is expanding, and we’re looking for Movio Crew globally, so check out our current open positions
