Movio Auckland: Home Is Where HQ Is

For Movio, New Zealand is home. Located in Auckland, our Headquarters are bustling with busy Movio crew. Our New Zealand team are a diverse and fun-loving bunch that are partial to a flat white and a Friday afternoon drink. In between weekly yoga sessions, team lunches and monthly birthday cake celebrations you can find our product development teams, data enthusiasts, creatives and marketers all working hard and pushing boundaries to ensure that we’re continually innovating and that our products continue to lead the market.

We chatted to some of our Auckland crew to get the lowdown on why they love our Movio office and some of the most exciting parts of their job.

Shona Grundy
Ex Head of Product

What’s one thing that you’ve found surprising about working here, that you weren’t expecting?
I don't think there is anything I have found particularly 'surprising', but I think the better way to position this is that I have found some things to be really delightful. I've spent the last 8 years or so trying to hone product and business best practices - I feel really emotional when I see things not being done thoughtfully, or where there is waste and a sense of not achieving. No company is perfect, but a company that strives to be better, in every way possible, is right where my heart is. For a company, at the age and stage of Movio, which still has this spirit of innovation and self-reflection, it is honestly fantastic and I feel like I’ve found my new home.

What’s the best part of your job at Movio?
I love myopically focusing on the end-user and identifying the real problems we are trying to solve. I take a deep breath and try to be bold and daring enough to really try to create a strategic plan with a step-change. The best ones are when you see an Engineer look at you side-ways like maybe you're a little deluded.  Then they go away, think about it, and actually solve it (with a massive grin on their face)! Pushing boundaries is why I think we all wanted to be in technology in the first place, right?! I love being part of that process.

One thing you’re most excited about for the next year at Movio?
The new products we're launching!

Billy Cheng
Senior Product Designer (Movio Media)

What’s one thing that you’ve found surprising about working here, that you weren’t expecting?
At Movio we are a mixed family of 21 different nationalities in our Auckland office. And yet we can still work and communicate professionally and friendly with each other, without too much cultural gap or impediments among us.

What do you enjoy most about working in the Auckland office?
The monthly BBQs, cakes and team lunches are great!

What is one of the most exciting projects that you were a part of this year?
The Movio Media Vision project, since it's given me such a great opportunity to shape the future of our studio facing product.

Grace Furniss
Digital Marketing Manager

What’s one thing that you’ve found surprising about working here, that you weren’t expecting?
How genuine everyone is here, every single person I’ve met has been so welcoming, friendly and helpful. I also find the appreciation of work/life balance amazing, you do your best work when you’re happy, calm and motivated. Working for a business that provides that space is the best!

How would you describe your day-to-day in three words?
Challenging, fun and unique.

What is one of the most exciting projects that you were a part of this year?
One of the most exciting projects so far that I’ve been a part of is launching our Instagram. It has just launched and is a fantastic way to show off our new branding, I also love that it will also be a place to celebrate our amazing staff! (Give us a follow!)

Erick De Barros
Team Lead, DevOps

What do you enjoy most about working for Movio?
The thing that I enjoy the most about Movio is the pace at which the company operates, pushing me to extract the most out of my creativity, test my capacity to learn and to adapt faster.

How would you describe your day-to-day in three words?
Challenging, meaningful and special.

What is one of the most exciting projects that you were a part of this year?
The Drone-Ci implementation, for three reasons:
1) This project had its beginning at the 2019 Hackathon, and right after the initial presentation we've decided to implement the solution across the entire company;
2) The decision of adopting Drone-ci as our primary CI/CD tool impacted Engineers' day-to-day activities positively, which in other words suggests that we've done an excellent job.
3) And finally, it shows that our engineer team, as a whole, is capable of moving fast, adapting and accepting new ideas.

Susanne North
Head of People, Culture and Performance

What do you enjoy most about working in the Auckland office?
The People. Definitely the people. Everyone is genuinely welcoming and works well together collaboratively, which is a real strength of Movio's. As a company, Movio really cares for and invests in its people with a real focus going into understanding how we can improve the Movio crew experience and how to grow and develop our team. I could tell from the moment I first interviewed that this was a place that I wanted to work.

What is one of the most exciting projects that you were a part of this year?
The most exciting project in my six months with Movio has been to roll out the Peakon Engagement Survey. The reason this is so exciting is because we will be able to measure and know how our crew are experiencing Movio and this will continue to guide our initiatives going forward, improving where we can and keep investing in areas that are important. Another exciting project has been putting the foundations in place for the development and growth of our entire crew at Movio. The ongoing work in these areas will strengthen our culture and continue to make Movio an employer of choice.

One thing you’re most excited about for the next year at Movio?
We will continue our work in the growth and development space, looking at ways to create career pathways and growing future leaders by building on the foundations we have created so far. This is super exciting and will hopefully have a really positive impact on our Movio crew’s career and growth, and how they are experiencing their time with Movio.
